It has been raining here for the last 3 days.  Of course 5 kids pent-up for that long is not fun.  I really have to reach into my bag of tricks to find boredom busters for them.  Trying to steer them away from the popular choice of video games and TV is not always easy.  One thing that I always like to encourage during times like this is reading.  I love children's literature, and deeply enjoy reading it with my children.  There is something about it that just unlocks my inner child.

I was thrilled when I received a copy of Mr. Pete, Where Are Your Feet?  As my children and I dove into the pages of this charming picture book about a parakeet whose mommy always asks him, "Mr. Pete, where are your feet?" we simply found ourselves enamored by him.  Mr. Pete, noticing that his toes are much smaller than the other birds suddenly becomes concerned that his feet must be missing.  He and his other bird friends set out in search of his missing toes looking through their little birdie homes.  The story contains a great message about acceptance and unconditional love.

As I read Mr. Pete, Where Are Your Feet? to my children, they were captivate by the story and enjoyed the pictures.  One aspect that truly made this story especially special was at the end of the book.  Katherine Bartlett includes a meet the birds section where she introduces readers to the real Mr. Pete and his friends. This really made the story come alive for my 6 year. As we read through it a second time he was pointing out each bird and able to put a names to the picture.

Not only is the story line a gem, but the illustrations are darling as well.  My 2 year old daughter enjoyed flipping through the pages over and over just to look at the pictures.  What a fabulous way to introduce reading to toddlers.
